In terms of the Zendrum, certainly it is another instrument from the acoustic ddrum set. I usually lay it out as follows: RH plays HH and ride sounds and cow bell sounds
LH plays snare and bass drum plus toms. I try to imagine I'm trading 4's with Jimi Hendrix playing a hand held drumset. the far row of butons is nice for tom rolls
I intersperse samples and loops where ever it is convenient. You gotta demo it! It's really great! Check out Bela Fleck for cool inspiration! :-).

Comments:I have been impressed with the Zendrum and would like to know your thoughts on the natural feeling of the instrument. I have not been able to get my hands on one to demo. What type of finger and hand arrangement do you
use for modeling the set. Is it a bit awkward to learn this the Zendrum if you have been playing a set.
Thanks

Comments:I appreciate your response very much. I have always wished that people (especially musicians) would enjoy music as pure sound rather than idolize the musicians performing the music. we are not gods to be idolized but, human beings expressing the human condition. we should let the purity of the harmony and the melody uplift us. Art is all about being enlightened and being uplifted. Not a single creator failed to do this and i believe that we shall continue to do this as creators of art. i agree that too much of today's music is filled with anger and sex. ironically I am angered by this. tomorrow's music must be utopian. god bless and take care.

I practice using "Airplay" these days every morning before I leave the house. I am working on 4 stroke ruff recently with feet alone.
When there is the luxury in my schedule, I practice my instrument for many hours and also piano and vocals.
Naturally, often before a big performance I practice with specific musical targets in mind.
Every day of my life I have a specific target of life and human happiness, so I practice bringing out my highest self each morning with spiritual practice.
I find it valuable to practice as in "put things into practice". I do my best not to simply practice for the sake of formality. There is a saying: "There is no need for formality
in a win or lose struggle.
Triumph is achieved through
all-out effort."
In terms of practicing when I'm burnt out, no I do my best not to practice when I'm burnt out. When I'm burnt out I do my best to sleep.
On one occasion, I over practiced before an important engagement, and I wound up with a big headache and a sluggish feeling technique when it came time to do the actual musical performance I had been practicing for.Because I had practiced heartily, but I had not left sufficient time for recovery, I was using primarily red muscle fibers and not enough white muscle fiber. I got through the performance with a Just Advance attitude, and I brought out my highest self regardless, but I made a determination to leave recovery time after extensive practice.
Please don't misunderstand...my drumming now is built on hours of practice. When I was attending Berklee College of Music, I had a habit of practicing often 8 hours per day and sometimes 16 hours per day on weekends.
Fortunately for me, I started at age 8, and came up in a household where constant practice was facilitated.
Sometimes as an adult I have to make myself practice. That's why I use inner directives such as "¡Just Advance!" or "¡Move Along!"( feel free to click on
Just Advance or inner directives on this site)
having a schedule I adhere to helps . In my private lessons I sometimes help people construct 10 week practice routines for themselves with some specific musical goal in mind. I am not in the business of missing my target.
When I am burnt out it is usually at the point where I have no more energy left. I am ready to collapse into a nice restful sleep.
Why are you burnt out? Do you need inspiration?
Michael Jordan used everything for inspiration and motivation. apparently once when He was mercilessly booed, he started scoring fast and early and achieved his career record. So if one can turn a "boo" into motivation, just think of all the other wonderful potential motivation there is in the environment! What ever you do whether its practice ,rest perform or study, together, Mike, let's achieve a Just Advance! :-)
Peace! :-).

n/p... the wholehearted attitude of relentless advance towards victory: that is my secret.
for rolls I recommend the squeeze stroke:
step 1 start in the Ready Position (sticks 1" above the playing surface)
Step 2 extend your third fourth and fifth fingers away from the stick
step 3 raise the stick 15 degrees and let it bounce freely on the playing surface.
Step 4 repeat step 3 but sqeeze the stick suddenly upon the second note such that you play an accented note.
Step 5 repeat step 4 and guide the stick smoothely to 45 degrees, then repeat step 5 over and over again.
Just Advance!

Dear Kenwood
I was wondering if you ever had a great deal of trouble with your weaker
hand, and a few tips or things you did to try and recover.
I have been playing since march this year and have jumped in quite a lot of
time on the drums
and i feel i have been seriously outgrowing my left hand. the technique in my
right is decent, what i mean is it feels natural. I have trouble with rolls,
and just want to catch this thing before it's way too late.

Peter,
thanks for your interesting question about the future of Music. If you chaeck out my video, "Just Advance"
I propose a new level of virtuosity. A level in which we cant help usher in a new age of harmony and consideration and human happiness. Sometimes I feel that today's music is dominated by sex and anger. I believe that the direction of music is changing. For one thing I feel that in the future, musicians will be more concerned with the happiness and uplifting of the audience and less concerned with the superiority, aggrandizement and special priviledge and objectification of themselves and the notes they play. 'what do you think?

Comments:Hello Dear Kenwood and Everybody!!
I felt the pull to check in again, seems like fortuitous timing. I've been meeting lotsa drummers the last few days (hi you guys!!!); I was so happy to be in NYC with my old friend Tor. The music was great; his group Irrepressible Spirit, my brother Omar Kabir played trumpet with Istanbul Orchestra-awesome Turkish funk/jazz, and I just saw a great band, Buzby, who will be at Wetlands in NY Sat night. Hmmmmmmmmm....SAINTS; I am thinking about that. I think that anybody can achieve absolute connection with the Divine, Godliness, BuddhaNature, the Mystic Law of the Universe---IF they want to, if they try. I'll just focus on how one interacts with other people. I try to have true compassion for others and strive to inspire hope in everyone I encounter. When I chant consistently (nam-myoho-renge-kyo) and try to live this way, I constantly have amazing experiences of bonding deeply with "strangers" all around me. In Buddhism, all that matters is what is in one's heart, and taking action. I don't think anybody Makes you a saint, but by helping other people to overcome their suffering, the natural Law of life makes your own life stronger, happier, and more tuned into eternity and the interconnectedness of all. I love you Kenwood!!!!!

Comments:Saints, by definition are persons who are able to be in direct contact and awareness of God. A saint has a higher or pure awareness or connection to God. The Roman Catholic church has a complicated process of declaring someone a Saint. One of the first and last steps are called Beatification and Veneration. In the Jewish faith the Kabbalist declares: "The goal of the Mystic [Saint] is to establish devekut, union with, or, as Jewish mystics prefer to define it, cleaving to God." Saints historically have had powers to heal and perform miracles. Woody I'm not aware of how Bhuddists designate someone to sainthood. Maybe you can elucidate us, LOL!! I believe Bhudda was a saint, yes? Saint Augustine of Hippo was born 354 AD. He is recognized as the greatest thinker and philosopher of Christian philosophy. Augustine was introduced to Neoplatonism by Plotinus. His teachings were similar to those from India. That is self-conscious mind or spirit arises from the transcendent One; from causal mind comes individualized soul. Finally, in the last stage, matter develops. Neoplatonic philosophy teaches that one must search inside not outside if one is to find his spiritual origin. The spirit at the center of man's innermost Self links him with the Universe. Augustine wrote in his "Confessions" how he experienced God through this introspection. I believe one can become closer to God through deep reflection and meditation in the creation of music. How's this for a start to the Discussion of Sainthood? - Ciao, Rich

Let me ask you something. How can I go about hooking up with the big time bands?
SECRET: "GO WHERE THEY ARE AND be kind and friendly" (but please don't forget the oil on your spoon at home : please be responsible). I am sure you can benefit from that. It's up to you, correct?
What do I have to do to get my foot in the door?
practice giving and receiving loyalty from people. self reflect and learn how to inspire loyalty from bandleaders. This way once you get your foot in the door you can make a beautiful lasting wholehearted phenomenon.
Law of averages says you will get your chance! Are you ready Greg? Learn by trying. Will you see the opportunity when it comes? Will you be in the right place at the right time to hear about the opportunities which are occuring to people each and every day somewhere on this wide wonderful globe of ours?
Just keep asking bandleaders if you can play with them. Einstein said 99 times I try and the 100th time I succeed. I hope you try to get detailed feedback from bandleaders and colleagues regarding your tapes and performances.
I hope you constantly self reflect. I am sure you can see your patterns and you can improve with dignity!

My neighbors would kill me if I played. I’m gonna be building a house soon. When it’s done I’ll be playing again. It’d be a real kick to start taking lessons from you when I can play again. In the mean time... if you’re playing any place in the Boston area, anytime, please let me know, if you think of it. I’d love to come see you play. My email address has changed so send any responses to the new one.

AJ,ERIC, ANTOINE, AND JERRY! JUST ADVANCE! YOU GUYS ROCK! checkittout.
AJ I am so happy you dropped by the James Brown Ensemble at Berklee. I just finished talking to James Brown's current drummer, Mousey Thomplson. He says JB is still a strict disciplinarian on his musicians(I'm paraphrasing) wow! I don't think James Brown would have left Coletrane to take a 50 minute sax solo!!! What do you think? On the other hand if you listen to Pee Wee Ellis on the hit single "Super Bad" on the "Star Time " complilation cd by James Brown, you'll hear the single most slammin' and Coletrane esque sax playing I have heard in funk to date.-and this is way back torwards the middle of the 20th century- the 60's! :-) Antoine- yes yes yes faith is everything! my practice of Buddhist faith has shown me ever deeper levels of happiness! :-) thanks for asking! :-) before and after? << Hi,
I just saw you tonight at the Van Dyck in Schenectady,
NY.
Let me just say that your performance, along w/ alex,
othello and the resto f the band completely made my
school vacation better than ever. It was great, and
then seeing you guys just made it amazing. I just
picked up your solo cd from you as well, and it was
superb. I was already digging your skills, due to
your performances on the JAco Video and Live in NY
cd's. BUt your solo's along w/ your dialogue were
just over the top. It is drummers like you that make
us bass players envy the talents and skills that it
takes to be a drummer. My dad, who isn't into music
at all, commented on how amazing you and alex were
together.
Thanks Alot

Comments:Hey Kenwood,
You may remember that I was out in Boston several weeks ago and brought a check for you videos to your apt. The videos are great. I really feel like I’ve learned from them. I’ve been buried here, so I haven’t had much time for drumming for at least a month. But I do have some questions. I noticed that you keep your toms pretty far apart. Does that affect your speed much? Is the kit you were playing on the video the same kit (or configuration) as the kit you used on the Pat Martino CD’s that you’re on? The kit on the CD’s sounds like it has many more pieces. The bass drum rolls that you do seem like a controlled jittering (that I haven’t been able to master). Is that a good description? - or have I missed the point somewhere? Do you use the one handed roll for loud fills? I can’t get it tight for anything above a whisper. BTW Joe Migliaccio, Kenwood actually credited that technique to one of his students.

Would you please elaborate on the one-handed roll technique that Johnny Rabb credits you for: The Freehand Technique. I believe you call it the "6ht Gear Technique".
Could you provide me/us with a brief synopsis? Thank you.

nick Brigandi: yo, at the present I have no plans, to visit
Dallas, except via cd! Nothing Like the Sun (Sting) Life on Planet Groove
Maceo and the Sweetest Days -Vanessa Williams and Live at Montreaux-
Miles Davis are among the better distributed ones along with Pat Martino's
Joyous Lake and Stone Blue...Hmm then there are a couple of albums with
Stanley Jordan (mad genius guitarist) and you can get my solocd "Just
Advance" upon request in this guestbook! Ciao! Oh by the way. The more
important question regarding development is an interesting question.kids
develop in different ways from adults as you know. They surprise us.I
was fortunately looked upon as a child prodigy...my interest in drumming
was really an interest in learning and an excitement about discovery
in general! I was exposed to and learned a few different languages and
instruments in the process. once I exhibited interest in music, the
discipline of piano lessons was pushed on me. I rebelled but later in
life I learned to stive for discipline. My friend Aydin Esen is a virtuoso
pianist (one of my favorites in the world) He experienced the incredible
discipline of a classical training from the earliest concievable age.
It paid off royally ...He is sooo accomplished. We've all heard horror
stories on the other hand about beauty contestants or ice skaters etc
who were pushed too hard. My friend and genius musician Delmar Brown
has a daughter who was singing and playing piano at 6 months...his secret?
He never pushed her, he would always leave the door open when he practiced.
He would leave the keyboards powered on so she could mess around on
them. Jaco had twins, too, you know... Hey let's ask one of them! you
Nick, do you have a question for felix Pastorius? Jaco's son? (He's
my godson). Bye!

Thanks for the reply K, I have a few questions on development
dealing with children. I have twin boys that are 19 months. I have them
listening to Classical right now to develop them. I can tell they both
have "it". One see's me bangin on things and he picked it up pretty
well. I'll play a chop and he'll try to bang it back. The other I think
will play some other instrument. He doesn't seem too interested in drums
but pull out the keyboard or xylophone, something he can hear a tone
with and he goes nuts. What suggestions would you have to nurture this?
I played by ear really young and took music lessons on piano but I was
more interested in watching them and then playing it back like that.
Those lessons didn't work out for me, I couldn't play like that. They
have the ear I just need to teach them how to "get it out" correctly.
Thanks for any suggestions you have.

Eric Wechter, yes I grip the stick usually between the index
finger and the thumb. I have used the middle finger for a fulcrum and
I have even held the stick on rare occasions between the middle finger
and the index finger when I have gotten tired of using the thumb and
index finger grip. Louder strokes demand I grip the stick harder between
the thumb and the proximal interphalangeal joint.(the joint closer to
the knuckle) gentler passages get played with a grip between the thumb
and the distal interphalangeal joint. I have found the widest range
of dynamics and speed using the thumb and index finger as my home base.

Neil, Harmonius Initiative is what you exhibit when you take
the initiative in your drumming life, but you determine to harmonize
with your musical environment! You are exhibiting harmonius initiative
by NOT saying : "Hey Kenwood what should I do next"? You are absolutely
correct in making an educated guess and asking me a more educated question.
Yes you can do EACH rudiment 100 times in a row , when you practice.
Please keep a record of your tempos and go ahead and keep advancing
the tempo over the months...If we have harmonius initiative, we have
synergy with each other and we maximize each others musical power. MUSIC
IS A NON-VIOLENT FIST WHICH CAN HELP CHANGE THE WORLD! Don't you think?

Michele and Anoushka!!!!!!!!!! Wow!!!!!!!!! I will never
forget those days either, and I never ever will forget my dear former
roomate Patrick! I live in Boston , noe, but I still hold dear the heated
and creative and fair-minded dialogues Patrick and I used to have about
the world.Patrick was a fierce crusader for education. Michele, my soul
needed to hear from you ! Thank you so much for putting such a good
vibe on my website...I am proud of it! Together, Let's Advance!

Hi Kenwood, I want to let you know that you've been helping
me a lot, not only in my music but in my life experience as well. You
made me go back to the very begining and it was really important to
me. When you showed me how you practice the single stroke I said to
me:"This guy is really serious!" I've never spent so much concentration
to practice a regular single stroke...! In our first private lesson,
you really shaked me. I felt like you were looking at me with a kind
of X-Ray.And you told me some things so deep which made me think a lot
and realize that I should ask me many questions before ask you. It scared
me because I could find many answers by my self. Some time after that,
I had a flamenco gig at Ryles. That day was magic! The band was really
grooving! For the first time I felt that I held the bird in my hands
for the whole night and it didn't go away. The smal mistakes didn't hurt
me as usual, because the Gipsy energy and the groove were so strong!
And do you know what I was playing? Just single strokes! I was playing
like a child! After that, somethings started to change inside me and
some of my questions about feeling, concentration and confidence started
to be answered. Man, music is so fun... and it doesn't have to be complicated...
Thank you, my friend, for every thing... I'll see you in the Spring...
